The ballad "Tears of the Dragon" stayed for many months on top the of charts in countries like Brazil where Dickinson has a large fanbase.
In my opinion, this is what most albums like this should have. This is what saves an album such as this from being a total failure. Although it strays a bit too far from what Bruce did in Maiden, you are not at a total loss if you purchase it. If you do in fact purchase it, buy the two disc, expanded edition, which has some amazing outtakes that would have saved this album from such a low rating. This is not really recommended to anyone who has any heart for Maiden. This is way too far removed from anything that Dickinson has done in his past career.
Singer, fencer, author, pilot, DJ, father, etc Bruce is truly a renaissance man in our modern times. Unlike his first solo effort, 'BTP' is heavier and more adventurous. Heaven forbid Bruce embrace several different styles and Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso them into his own. The production is about the same, maybe a little better than what we heard on 'Fear of the Dark'. The guitars are very bluesy and laidback.
There is a dark and sinister feel on several of the tracks. Mixed with these emotions there is also a feeling of loss and struggle. There are a bunch of solos and leads laced throughout a somewhat tribal background. There is an equal amount of crunch to open chord in all the songs. The bass has some funk in it and this adds a new level to the down tempo songs. He doesn't follow the guitars very much.
The drums are surprisingly standard with few to little surprises. There is even a little keyboard work in the background of some songs. Bruce's voice is incredible. He reminds us why he is such a force to be reckoned with on every track. The only real complaints here are the political overtones in the lyrics and their utter lack of subtlety.
We don't want to hear a British man complaining about American politics, especially when we're used to hearing him sing about fantasy and history. Sound bites of former presidents take away from the escapism that we have come to expect. This album has taken a considerable amount of flack from the usual fan boys. This album in terms of quality isn't that far removed from the first four Danzig records. They're both Blues based Metal, they both have seemingly simple Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso and musicianship.
The difference here is Bruce's Metal is heavier and of a higher caliber. There's also more variation in the vocals, song structure and musical relevance. There are 8 replies to this review. Please try again While You Were Sleeping - Frogg Cafe - Frogg Cafe. People tend to forget in the wake of 's successful and still-going reunion of Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson released some killer albums and this one is arguably my favorite. Aggressive, passionate and inspired, the performances and songs on here are just as good as anything Maiden ever did.
Right from the opener "Cyclops" and "Hell No" show the man finally in complete control of his musical destiny and while still sounding like what came before, you can hear smatterings Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso new sounds thrown in here and there.
But the From Me To You - The Torero Band - Lennon & McCartney Al Estilo Tijuana gem on here is a song that I wish would make it to Maiden's setlists, "Tears of the Dragon". Hauntingly beautiful and staggeringly well-written, this is such a great track that I find myself digging it out once every few months just to take in it's glory.
Speaking of different sounds, it actually has a quasi-reggae breakdown after the main guitar solo This also being the Expanded Edition, you've got an impressive 16! Another album unfairly looked-over that should be in your collection. One person found this helpful. I loved this album when it first was unleashed and now with the remastering and bonus cd I love it even more. I always felt Balls To Picasso was Dickinson's first "real" solo album, and after the sub Whats Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me) - Rod Stewart - The Best Of Rod Stewart work on the last few Iron Maiden albums Balls To Picasso shows how powerful Bruce is and why is one of the finest voices in metal.
This album takes you where Maiden would never dare to go, and Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso expands his song writting ability to show diversity and style unlike what he was allowed to create in the confines of Iron Maiden.
While Maiden was releasing below average metal with a tone deaf hack of a replacement singer, Bruce was creating adventerous music that would be well thought out and timelass.
Here's where his solo career really begins Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso he shines like a sun burning everything in sight. The bonus cd is crammed with extras that further prove why Bruce is the master. The entire Remastered and expanded Bruce Dickinson catalog is a must have for any music fan.
If you have the originals of these like I do you will still want to get this collection. I'm not going to get into review the album song by song. That's already been covered. I will say this is my favourite Dickinson solo album. This reissue is excellent. From the remastering to the b-side disc it's top notch. I appreciate how it's got the original album on a disc of it's own instead of tacking b-sides on at the end.
That's how the artist intended it and that's how it should be. Don't get me wrong, I understand when there's only a few extra songs that's it's economically better to throw it all onto one cd. Such is the case with "Tattooed Millionaire". I get that. Since there was enough material to put on a second disc for "Balls to Picasso' I'm glad they decided to throw it all on one disc.
Plus it's nice to listen to a whole cd of nothing but b-sides. I know that's kind of neurotic, but that's just what I like. Anyhow, the remastering is excellent and booklet is pretty cool. If you're looking for an upgrade, buying for the first time, or had this in the past and are wanting to get again, I suggest you pick this up. This is my favourite Bruce Dickinson solo Cd. Sound quality is the same as the original released CD. It's not Remastered, just Expanded Edition. Don't buy the Japanese import!
It's just the domestic pressing with an OBI strip!
About “Balls to Picasso”. Balls to Picasso is a Hard rock album by Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, released in It is the second effort in Dickinson’s solo career and the first released after he had officially left Iron Maiden. Bruce had an album he recorded beforehand with Keith Olson, which was Bruce's attempt to go Dream Theater, but after meeting Roy Z he opted to write more tracks. Balls to Picasso is generally a good but inconsistent album. It remains a necessary bridge in Bruce Dickinson's career between a frustrated past and a bright renaissance. Balls To Picasso also shows a soothing side of Bruce and given the fact the Tears Of The Dragon has been overplayed as hell and find myself enjoying Change Of Heart more that that one. Balls To Picasso was the record where Bruce Dickinson solidified himself as a .
